Methods of Documentation and Measured Drawings

Introduction

This is a module that helps students to develop an understanding of the principles of building preservation and the methods of recording it, which are measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. For measured drawings, students are required to document historically and architecturally significant buildings in the collection of plans, elevations, sections, details and axonometric views/ models and a report.

Project 1 (Sketchbook and Journal)

This is an individual on-site exercise that we are required to document and sketch the building as well as the site context. Students should start off from drawing the plans, elevations and sections of the building to understand the building better. The building I got was Istana Negara , previously known as Muzium Diraja , in Kuala Lumpur. Throughout this project, I have identified that Istana Negara is giving a sense of standard and grandeur.

Conclusion:

I have also recalled all my techniques to document and sketch a historical building. Last but no least, I learned that we should appreciate all of the architectural cultural heritage that we have right now.

Project 2 (Measured Drawings and Model)

This is a group project where we are assigned to measure and document our building, Government Rest House and translate them into a set of drawings. While carrying out this project, I learned the proper way to measure a building and document it We managed to translate all the measured data into scale drawings. My main part is the longer section, Section A-A. I also worked with other team and helping them to finishing their CAD drawing.

Conclusion:

I have recalled all the construction methods and architectural details that I have learned to adapt in this project. On the other hand, we managed to complete our model in time. I realised the importance of team work. Also, we managed to show additional information about the building through the physical model and I am very happy with our end product.

Project 3 (Report & Video on Measured Building)

This project is a report that consists of a set of drawings of the building measured and it should include the importance of this building from various aspects, like architectural, historical and cultural. We are also required to produce a photobook for this building.

Conclusion:

To find the information about this building was the most difficult part. While me and my groupmates are doing the report, we explained the architectural details and elements regarding Istana Negara, like the design principles and elements applied on the building. Then, filtering and editing the photos for the photobook is not as easy as I thought but we managed to do it with the power of group work. We managed to recognize the architectural historic structure while doing the report and photobook. We also spent much time and energy on our video to confirm and decide the way we shooting and about the editing part. I really learnt much throughout this meaningful project.
